Job Title: Pre-school Assistant / Key Worker

Rate of pay: Up to £7.49 per hour dependant on qualifications. Includes 5.6 weeks paid annual leave pro rata.

Purpose of the job: To work as part of the pre-school team under the direction of the pre-school manager to provide safe, high quality education and care for young children. To ensure that a stimulating and enjoyable environment is maintained for the children. To work as a key worker after appropriate training.

Main duties

• To assist with the planning of the curriculum.

• To help to set up the playroom for the daily programme and to help tidy
away at the end of the session, ensuring that all toys are clean and safe at all times.

• To act as a key worker (if required and after appropriate training) to a small group of children, liaising closely with parents/carers and ensuring each child’s needs are recognised and met.

• To advise the pre-school leader of any concerns e.g. over children, child protection, parents/carers, or the safety of equipment, preserving confidentiality as necessary.

• To be aware of any special needs a child may have and to familiarise oneself with any relevant play and learning plans.

• To teach children, offering an appropriate level of support and stimulation.

• To attend staff meetings.

• To attend in-service training courses and meetings as required.

• To keep completely confidential any information regarding the children, their families or other staff which is acquired as part of the job.

• To keep up-to-date with current good practice.

• To undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the pre-school leader, in accordance with the pre-school’s objectives.

• Run sessions of the Bobtails group, on a rota basis, which is for under-5s
accompanied by parents/carers. To include setting up toys and crafts; preparing
refreshments for children and adults; running a singing session; and clearing
away at the end of the session.

Person specification

Essential criteria

1. CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Pre-school Practice, NVQ level 2 or equivalent / Previous experience of working with young children.
2. Willingness to learn & attend relevant training.
3. A satisfactory enhanced CRB check which confirms suitability to work with children.
4. Commitment to diversity and equal opportunities.

6. Friendly, flexible approach.
7. Health clearance for the role.
8. Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative.

Desirable criteria

1. CACHE Level 3 Certificate in Pre-school Practice, NVQ level 3 or equivalent.
2. A years experience of working as a key-worker in a similar setting.
