Cottontails news July 2019

This month we have had some new arrivals at Cottontails-5 very hungry caterpillars! The children have been observing their rapid growth each day as they get fatter and fatter and we are looking forward to what will happen after that. This has brought about lots of discussion about life cycles and we are now very knowledgeable about that of a butterfly.

Our inter-generational visits to Arlington Manor are continuing each week and we have been involved in some lovely activities including painting bird boxes and playing parachute games with the residents. Myself, Ruth and Arlington Manor’s Lisa have been on a couple of radio shows over the last few weeks talking about the excellent time everyone have at these sessions and all of the benefits to both the children and the care home residents. We are all very happy to be able to be involved in such a worthwhile and rewarding project.

Last week, we took our older children on their preschool outing to Shepreth wildlife park. After a small transport hiccup and despite the rainy weather, we had a lovely day which was much enjoyed by everyone. Seeing the tigers and walking through the ‘bat cave’ were particular highlights and in the educational centre, we learnt about caring for animals and that they have feelings too. The children were able to hold and stroke rats, stick insects and giant snails and see a snake up close too, very brave!

Cottontails news April 2019

This month, construction activites have been very popular with the children, they have made houses and vehicles for themselves with the big builder blocks and at forest school they built a ladder which has stood the test of time and has been used for some weeks now to climb up into the trees.

For Shrove Tuesday, everyone had a turn at trying to flip pancakes and that was much debate about
which is the best pancake topping!

We have now begun inter-generational sessions with visits to Arlington Manor care home which will now be a regular visit. So far, they have been very successful, the children have been interacting with the seniors at the care home, reading stories with them and we have sung songs to them. The children are developing in confidence, empathy and social skills through this experience and we are seeing the positive results of the sessions every time we go. Thank you very much Arlington Manor for making us feel so welcome.
We have also been on a very exciting outing to The Lawrence Room at Girton College this month. We took the bus to the college which was definitely a highlight of the outing for the children! At the college, the children looked around the amazing collection which includes Anglo-saxon artefacts excavated from the Girton College site and an Egyption mummy. The children asked excellent questions and worked well to find all of the artefacts that were on their ticksheets.

Cottontails are actively seeking local volunteers to join our committee and help us with fundraising. All of the experience, ideas and input we can receive from new committee members means we can continue to run
our fantasic pre-school for the local children of Girton.
